This project started in earnest on March 23, 2002, born of the alchemy of our friendship, our long time desire to contribute to the Fender legacy and several liquid lunches. Our initial goal was simple; create an unofficial companion piece to Richard Smith's "Fender: The Sound Heard Around the World".
We gathered upstairs at the Social in Islington (London, UK) for the first photo shoot and several pints of Guinness. The day started with a long journey from Ladbroke Grove in west London to Enfield in north London to pick me up. In the trunk of the car was some incredible vintage Fender gear. Amongst other things, there were two custom color Jazzmasters (1962 Black & 1963 Lake Placid Blue) both with matching headstocks. I added my 1958 and 1959 sunburst Jazzmasters. There were also a couple of brown Princetons, a brown reverb unit, several steel guitars and some extremely rare Fender ephemera.
This first photo session was our opportunity to experiment with some of our ideas. We did not expect much other than a rough guide to future sessions. However, as testament to Paul's photographic talent the session yielded some visually stunning results which will be included in the final version of the book.
Great idea Terry! I (still) can't wait for the book, but in the meantime, this site will keep our vintage Fender appetites whetted!
